Fantasy book cover of "A Forbidden Alchemy" by Stacey McEwan. Book features a glowing vial on the cover and an emptying vial on the spredges. Arrows lead off of book: historical dystopian fantasy, magical haves vs have nots, duology, class war and rebellion, friends to enemies to lovers to ??, government corruption and secrets, he falls first (and harder).
A Forbidden Alchemy ARC Review: What to Expect

Thank you to the publisher for the ARC of A Forbidden Alchemy for me to review.

This was a romantasy win–it combined a lot of features and tropes that I love:

  • historical

  • dystopia

  • rebellion

  • literally any form of enemies to lovers

  • MMC falls first (and so much harder)

  • a jealous ex

Nina and Patrick meet as kids and accidentally discover a secret their corrupt government has been hiding. While their paths diverge that day, their discovery sets flame to a revolution that's been smoldering for generations.

I loved seeing their paths cross again as adults and the push and pull of their individual goals and objectives and seeing how each of their beliefs and philosophies inspire or antoagonize the other.

The romance is also just so, so good.

I will leave this warning for future readers though: this book ends on an absolutely gut wrenching cliff hanger. Thank the book gods this is only a duology, because I don't know if I'd survive another cliff hanger like that!

I'm already dying for the second book, so fingers crossed that the publisher blesses me with another ARC and the author writes the second book quickly!

A Forbidden Alchemy comes out on July 1 and you can pick up a copy here.
